Graphic narrative - Design 2
This is my second design for my narrative. It is still based on the song Drunk by Ed Sheeran. For this piece i rough sketched a photo that I found on Tumblr that I thought would be good to use. I then uploaded it to Photoshop and sharpened and darkened all of the lines to make the sketch stand out a bit more. I then went over the sketch with the paint tool to make it more bold and added some more colour. I also used the 'Freeform pen tool' to add more detail to my sketch and create more definition on some of his features. To create the blue water (from his tears) I simply just used the pencil tool in a thin pen setting. I then added a lighter shade of blue to create ripples of mini waves and define the river. To create the tear drops again I just used the pencil tool in blue and sketched an outline, and then went on to fill it in. I then went over the tear drops outline in black and purple to make it stand out and match the rest of the sketch. For the text I downloaded a font from 'dafont'. I wanted a font that looked a little rough and handwritten as I feel it suits the subject.

Statement of Intent
What song lyrics have you selected? Why?
I've chosen a song by Ed Sheeran called 'Drunk'. I chose the lyrics 'I wanna be drunk when I wake up, on the right side of the wrong bed'. This is one of my favourite songs and I mainly based my choice on the design on my graphic narrative first more than the song lyrics have any personal meaning to myself.
What format will your Graphic Narrative take?
My graphic narrative is an Illustration. I thought it would link in pretty well to place the lyrics inside the design of the Jack Daniels bottle as the song I have chosen is talking about being Drunk and alcohol. I thought that this would look pretty cool and suit the song well. My main focus is my typography because I will need to emphasise the detail on the design of the Jack Daniels so it looks identical and so it's clear for others to understand.
Ive decided to not include the design of the bottle and only the label as I think it looks better.
My second main focus will be the font as the JD design uses curvy and bold text which is really important to get right otherwise it won't have the effect of looking identical.
My script is pretty historical as the design I've used for my graphic narrative on the whole is being based on Jack Daniels which as been around for years.
I think BMD Design will inspire the style I am working towards as our designs are quite similar which makes it easier to gain inspiration, and we both have the same outcome aim which is for our design to still be eye catching and interesting to look at even though it doesn't include colours.
My main techniques are going to be hand sketching/drawing with the help of a light box from College, with a lot of typography and detail to text and design. For this I will just be using a dark shaded pencil and then to outline it and make it appear more bold I will go over it with a black ink pen to make the text also stand out.

How will you change your script to make it more
modern, historical or futuristic twist to your script, illustrating a
mood/style or intended target audience?
My script is pretty historical as the design I've used for my graphic narrative on the whole is being based on Jack Daniels which as been around for years.
What designers or illustrators do you feel will
influence and inspire the style you are working toward and why?
For my influences on my graphic art work I've been inspired by "BMD Design" who are a French illustration company. There design styles are very similar to the appearance of the Jack Daniels design, with a lot of defined text, not much colour, curvy and bold fonts that have been written inside shapes of objects etc.
I like they way their designs aren't very colourful but are still quite eye catching and interesting to look at.

Which techniques and materials do you hope to use?
List and include source i.e. collage, photographic, typography, drawings,
diagrams etc…

Self Directed Work: Paul Parsons
Roy Lichtenstein
Is an American Pop Artist. He became a leading figure in new art movement along with Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns.
- He lived in New York and studied at Ohio State University
- He received his Master of Fine Arts in 1949
- In 1951, he had his first solo art exhibition at the Carlebach Gallery in NYC
- He has two sons, David (1954) and Mitchell (1956)
- He then started teaching at Rutgers University.
- One of his best known pieces of work is "Drowning Girl" (1963)

Examples of Work:
One of my favourite pieces of work from Roy is his pop art creation of Marilyn Monroe.
I love the way her face is constructed and their is still detail of her hair and her make up and her beauty spot. She makes a very good pop art cartoon.
I also love the way that the quote fits in with the background of the design which is a picture of the Empire State building.
The colours are bold where need be, such as the outline of her body and some of her facial features to make her stand out, especially her strands of her to make it look for defined and detailed.
The use of imagery reflects the theme well and the background is of the Empire State building in New York and a Marilyn is speaking about how she doesn't mind living in a mans world, as long as she can be a women in it and do as she pleases just as well as men do what they please.
The first thing my eyes are drawn too is the speech bubble because I want to know what she's thinking and why she is posed like that.
Quotes
Here are some of my favourite quotes from Roy that I have researched and stand out for me:
"Pop art looks out into the world. It doesn't look like a painting of something, it looks like the thing itself"
"I'm not really sure what social message my art carries, if any. I don't really want it to carry one, I'm not interested in the subject matter to try to teach society anything, or to try and better our world in any way"
"i don't think that I am over his influence but they probably don't look like Piccaso's; Picasso himself would probably have thrown up looking at my pictures"
